Web Directions

John Allsop has data published from his latest survey on current web trends.  I for one am thrilled that Firefox is the browser of choice for most people - it is the best out there.  I am also starting to use Chrome a lot more.  I never, ever use IE!!  Check here for the PDF with all details.

Cyber cafe offers home to homeless

In a country where an street address is key to getting a job, an Internet cafe near Tokyo is offering the unemployed and homeless more than just a virtual, email address. In addition to the usual Internet services, comic books and unlimited beverages offered by most Japanese Internet cafes, Cyber @ Cafe offers its residents long-term lodging and an official registered address.

This simple service is vital for the 50 semi-permanent residents of the cafe, many of whom have taken refuge here after being laid off abruptly during the current recession.

Facebook virus called 'Koobface'

Just spreading the word ... in case you are on FB:

Facebook's 120 million users are being targeted by a virus called "Koobface" that uses the social network's messaging system to infect PCs and steal sensitive information such as credit card numbers.

Koobface spreads by sending messages to friends with subject headers like, "You look just awesome in this new movie," direct recipients to a website where they are asked to download what it claims is an update of Adobe Systems Inc's Flash player.

If they download the software, users end up with an infected computer, which then takes users to contaminated sites when they try to use search engines from Google, Yahoo, MSN and Live.com, according McAfee.

German police allowed to hack into computers

And so ...

German police will get sweeping new powers to hack into people's home computers with 'Trojan' viruses sent through the internet. New laws, some of the toughest in Europe, will also allow police to bug and photograph suspect's homes, tap their phones and track the location of their mobile calls.

Under the compromise, the police will need a judge's approval before using the Trojans, even in an emergency. Trojans will carry "Remote Forensic Software" that can search hard drives and send evidence back to investigators without their having to enter the suspect's home.

Finally: Widescreen YouTube!!

YouTube has switched to a widescreen format as part of its drive to encourage Hollywood studios to release films on the site. The video-sharing website increased the size of its player after years of complaints from users, many of whom have switched to rivals offering bigger screens and higher quality.

The move to widescreen is the latest in a number of recent changes at YouTube, which was purchased by Google for $1.65 billion (£1.07 billion at the current exchange rate) in 2006 but has been unable so far to turn its massive popularity into profits. The website has also been experimenting with high-definition videos.

Virtual affair in second life leads to divorce

Remember the website Second Life I mentioned a few days ago? Well it seems a woman discovered that her husband's alter ego on Second Life was having affairs with virtual women. She is divorcing him. And the solicitor handling the case said that this was the second divorce case this week involving Second Life. Interesting!

Amy Taylor, 28, said her three-year marriage to David Pollard, 40, came to an end when she twice walked in on him watching his online character, Dave Barmy, having sex with other virtual women. The couple met in an internet chatroom in 2003 and married in real life and in a fantasy tropical setting in Second Life.

However, Taylor always had suspicions about Pollard's online loyalty. At one point she hired a virtual detective to test whether his avatar was cheating on her, after finding him at the computer watching his character having sex with a prostitute.(Link)

British Accents confuse Google iPhone

A new US-developed Google application for the iPhone which allows users to search for information using voice-recognition has hit a stumbling block - it does not understand British accents.

The high-tech programme, which was launched this week with much fanfare, allows users to search Google for cinema times, bring up pictures and information and convert currency and measurements with one tap of the screen. iPhones owners can download it for free, and if popular, it could be extended to other mobile phones. But British iPhone owners who eagerly downloaded the new software to their phones were left baffled after it responded to requests with bizarre titbits of unwanted information.

When asked to search for "iPhone" the results varied wildly. A user with a Scottish accent found his phone opted to search for the term "sex" instead, and suggested a link to an adult web site. On a second attempt, the search engine looked for "sledding". Asked in a Kentish accent to search for "iPhone", it came up with "my sister" and "Einstein", while a Surrey user was offered "myspace" as well as "Einstein". A Yorkshireman was offered "bonfire" before managing to get "iPhone" - the only time the voice-recognition worked. The most unusual responses were to a Welsh accent, when the device interpreted "iPhone" as "gorillas" and "kitchen sink".

Google points out on its website that the application is "currently available only in US English".

Nintendo smart & talking recipe book

A talking kitchen guide made by video game brand Nintendo could spell the end of the traditional cook book. Instead of poring over dog-eared copies of Elizabeth David or Jamie Oliver with flour-covered fingers, the new computerised guide promises wannabe chefs "hands-free" advice.

With hundreds of recipes from around the world already programmed in, it talks users through each step, as well as helping them with everything from controlling calories to compiling a shopping list.

Makers believe it could do to the cook book what satellite navigation did to the traditional road map. Designed for Nintendo's DS console, "Cooking Guide: Can't Decide What to Eat?" is based on a virtual cooking game which was a runaway success in Japan.

Rather than leafing through books, stressed cooks can simple type in what they want to eat and chose from a variety of suitable recipes. The device can make calculations to adjust portions, alter recipes for slimmers or even work out the cost of the weekly shop. It also offers ideas for people wondering what to do with the usual random assortment of ingredients at the back of the fridge. And stressed cooks can skip past complex options by entering how much time they have into the search.

Nintendo claims using the guide, which is released at the end of this month, is "a piece of cake". But whether it will help those capable of burning a pot of water remains to be seen. (Telegraph)

Disney movies free online

I am so surprised! Disney will be letting people in the US watch their movies for free on their Disney Online website.

Disney will stream full-length movies on its Web site for the first time, as part of its "Wonderful World of Disney" series on ABC. The films are scheduled to stream through August.

"Finding Nemo" is available at www.Disney.com/WWoD through Friday, after the film's airing Saturday on Disney-owned ABC. "Monsters, Inc.," "Haunted Mansion," "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen," "Princess Diaries 2," "Freaky Friday" and "Peter Pan" also will be available on the site this summer.

A Disney spokesman said the decision to stream movies for free marks an "evolution" in the company's online strategy. Fox, Universal, Lionsgate and MGM have all previously placed titles on Hulu, the NBC Universal/News Corp.-owned site, while Disney has gone the pay route and kept its films, for the most part, on iTunes. Google opens up product testing to millions

Usually Google tests its products and updates internally with its staff before releasing it to the public. With Google Labs, enhancements to Gmail have been released to the public and millions of people can test them and can send feedback direct to the people who created the stuff. I have enabled a few like Signature Tweaks and Superstars. Let us see how it works out. The most popular features will become part of Gmail. I wish Gmail allowed sending of HTML signatures. That is a feature I'd embrace wholeheartedly!

In a first, Google is opening up its testing process by calling on tens of millions of Gmail users to put new features of the service through their paces. Gmail Labs has launched 13 settings for users to play around with and tell engineers directly what they think of them.

The new settings include things like 'Pictures in Chat' which puts portraits in chat sessions, 'Superstars' which lets you put different icons on mail, 'Old Snakey' lets you play the classic game in Gmail, and 'Email Addict' forces you to take a screen break by locking you out of the Gmail for 15 minutes. Lost cameras "phone home" to catch thieves

This is going to be the memory card I will purchase before my next holiday! Even if the camera gets stolen the memory card maintains contact with the your computer and sends it the photographs. And the way the thieves were caught was just too funny!

Alison DeLauzon thought the snapshots and home videos of her infant son were gone for good when she lost her digital camera while on vacation in Florida. Then a funny thing happened: her camera "phoned home." Equipped with a special memory card with wireless Internet capability, DeLauzon's camera had not only automatically sent her holiday pictures to her computer, but had even uploaded photos of the miscreants who swiped her equipment bag after she accidentally left it behind at a restaurant.

"I opened up the Eye-Fi manager on the computer and, lo and behold, there are the guys that stole our cameras," said DeLauzon, a native of New York's Long Island suburb. "Not only is it the guy who stole our camera ... but the guy took a picture of (his accomplice) holding our other camera."

DeLauzon received the Eye-Fi, a 2-gigabyte SD memory card that fits into millions of digital cameras, as a holiday gift to go with her Canon camera. Priced at about $100, the card automatically uploads pictures to a home computer or online photosharing service as soon as the user is linked to a familiar wireless network.

Luckily, the culprits passed by an unsecured network, whose factory-installed setting matched that of DeLauzon's home system, and the Eye-Fi automatically shipped the photos: first baby pictures, then the snap-happy scoundrels. (Reuters)

3D tours of Disney World on Google Earth

Now you can tour Disney World Florida virtually before you visit. Google Earth is providing this new service. You can walk through the whole place. For now you can see only the outside of the buildings. Soon visitors will be able to enter inside and even check out the hotel rooms. how cool is that!?!

The programme allows tourists to explore a detailed recreation of the rides, streets, and hotels across the Orlando site. Visitors can walk or fly around the park as they wish. Information on the park's 1,500 attractions pops up on the side of the screen, along with photos, videos and booking details. Click on a restaurant and the menu will appear.

Google Earth already allows users to explore 3D recreations of some major world cities, but the intricate models supplied by Disney mean that the theme park plan is one of the most detailed ever produced. Even the park’s numerous statues, benches, lamp posts and banners are included. (Telegraph)

Full-feature IE 8 coming in August

Microsoft Corp said on Tuesday it plans to test-release a feature-complete version of its Internet Explorer 8 Web browser in August. Microsoft released a first test version of IE 8 in March, providing developers and Web designers a preview of the latest update to the world's most widely-used browser.

The next test release, IE 8 Beta 2, will be targeted more at ordinary Web users. It will come with all the features that the browser will have when it is officially launched -- although it may still contain bugs, since it is a test version. Microsoft has not set an official release date for IE 8. The company released Internet Explorer 7 in October 2006. (More here: Reuters)

Blackberry & India govt to resolve security concerns

Further to this, the makers of Blackberry, RIM is now going to meet with Indian officials, even though RIM is declining to comment. Obviously RIM would like to market the Blackberrys more aggressively in the sub continent - it is a huge market. I would love to know the exactly how they manage to resolve this. Who will give?

Blackberry-maker Research In Motion will again meet Indian officials on Thursday to find a solution to concerns raised by security agencies, a telecoms ministry official said. India's security agencies have said the BlackBerry e-mail device posed a risk as e-mails sent using it could not be traced or intercepted and the government has written to RIM asking it to put servers in India.

"There is a meeting tomorrow," an Indian official said, who did not want to be identified. A spokesman for RIM in India declined comment. Indian Telecoms Minister Andimuthu Raja said last week the Canadian firm had assured the government to come out with a solution in two months. (Reuters)

The Future of Computers

OMG! Another baby put up for sale!

I simply cannot believe it! Another couple, this time in Canada put their 7-day old baby up for sale on Craigslist. Are these people like sheep? Following what someone did without thought to the ramifications of what they are doing?

A couple has been arrested in what Canadian police said on Tuesday was an apparent offer to sell a seven-day-old baby girl on Craigslist for C$10,000 ($10,100). A woman who saw the offer on the popular website alerted police who tracked down the 23-year-old mother and 26-year-old father using a cell phone number that was listed in the advertisement.

Vancouver police said the couple told investigators the offer was a hoax, but were arrested for public mischief with other criminal charges possible as the investigation continues. "There are so many questions here," Constable Tim Fanning told reporters. Police said the advertisement described the baby as "very cute" and "unexpected" and that its parents, who could not afford to care for it, wanted to give it a good home. The child was put in the care of social workers. (Reuters)

Indian Govt wants to spy on Blackberry messages

.... but the makers of Blackberry have refused to decrypt messages - I like how they insisted that the technology would not allow them to! India is not the only country that does not allow widespread use of the Blackberry because of fears that these devices may be used for terrorism. So if you need to provide an ID card to buy a cycle, what documentation would you need to supply to be able to use a Blackberry?

So, as I see it slowly the Governments (not just the Indian Govt. mind you) are clamping down on our freedoms, finding more ways to keep tabs on us, but it does not seem to be affecting the terrorists in anyway. Last I checked Bin Laden was just fine somewhere and bombs exploding and people dying with fail safe regularity.

The Canadian manufacturer of Blackberry mobile phones has rejected demands by the Indian government that it help decrypt suspicious text messages. The firm, Research in Motion, says its technology does not allow any third party - even the company itself - to read information sent over its network.

The Indian authorities have been reluctant to allow the widespread use of Blackberries in the country. They fear militants and criminals may take advantage of the secure system. A number of other countries around the world have expressed similar fears. (BBC)

You Tube & Net freedom threatened

Viacom is suing You Tube for 1 billion dollars because You Tube did not manage to rid it site of unauthorized video. These include TV programs and other stuff, like the documentary 'An Inconvenient Truth' which was viewed 1.5 billion times. But what are the ramifications of this case if Viacom wins? Will You Tube be forced to shut down? OMG!!! I hope not! I need my cooking shows and my gag shows and my 'how-to' videos!!

A one billion dollar lawsuit against YouTube threatens internet freedom, according to its owner Google. Google's claim follows Viacom's move to sue the video sharing service for its inability to keep copyrighted material off its site.

Viacom says it has identified 150,000 unauthorised clips on YouTube.

In court documents Google's lawyers say the action "threatens the way hundreds of millions of people legitimately exchange information" over the web. The search giant's legal team also maintained that YouTube had been faithful to the requirements of the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act and that they responded properly to claims of infringement. In papers submitted to a Manhattan court, Google said it and YouTube "goes far beyond its legal obligations in assisting content owners to protect their works".

Viacom disagreed that either firm had lived up to that standard and said that they had done "little or nothing" to stop infringement. (BBC)
